Set along the Mexican frontier, El Paso has unique desert landscapes, beautiful flora and fauna, and various cultural and historical attractions. From art galleries and restaurants to theaters and national parks, there is no shortage of things to do in El Paso, whether on vacation or at home.

Here are some highlights for your to-do list.

The Centennial Museum and Chihuahuan Desert Gardens

Add these sites to your must-see list if you’re a history buff. Built to mark the centenary of Texas’ independence from Mexico, the Centennial Museum features a wealth of fascinating exhibits dedicated to the natural and cultural history of the Southwest and Mexico. It houses permanent exhibits related to the region’s archeology, ethnology, geology and paleontology, and the arts and sciences. Next to the museum, you’ll find the Chihuahuan Desert Gardens, with more than 800 native plants in specially themed gardens.

The National Border Patrol Museum

As a frontier city, El Paso has played an essential role in the history of the US-Mexico border. Offering a fascinating view of this history, the museum highlights the governmental agency that is most significant in administering and patrolling the area. The comprehensive exhibit features a collection of nearly every vehicle used by border patrol officials, from cruisers to motorcycles, helicopters, and planes. Highlights include an OH-6 helicopter, a Piper Super Cub, and a Conquistador speedboat. You’ll also see a range of uniforms, badges, weapons, and other memorabilia, as well as photos and artwork that paint a more thorough picture of this fascinating history.

The Chamizal National Memorial

For a different take on the evolving history of US-Mexican relations, visit the Chamizal National Memorial. Encompassing a theater, a museum, an amphitheater, and multiple art galleries, the 55-acre site commemorates the settlement of disputes between the two countries. Specifically, the memorial honors the outcome of the Chamizal Dispute, a 100-year episode related to a natural shift of the Rio Grande tributary between El Paso and Juarez. The spacious surrounding parkland plays host various cultural events throughout the year, including summer concerts on Sunday evenings between June and August.
